1. A report on a road accident.

A serious/fatal/devastating/tragic/heart-rendering road accident at Dhaka–kushtia Highway.
                      4 killed on the spot and 20 others seriously/critically/mortally/severely injured


Staff correspondent,Kushtia 13 October,2013 : A serious/fatal/devastating/tragic/heart-rendering road accident took place/occurred at Dhaka-kushtia Highway last evening at about /around /at 7.30.p.m. A Dhaka-bound bus collided head-on with a kushtia-bound truck near Kumarkhali bus-stand. Four people died/ were killed on the  spot and twenty others were  seriously/critically/mortally/severely injured. The dead people were identified and they were Faruk Hossain(34),Abbas Ali(41),Asad Islam(25) and Rahima Khatun(30).The injured people were taken to/sent to/admitted into the local hospital. The spot became very pathetic because their relatives cried loudly. On information, the police rushed to the spot. It is known/informed from local people/eye witness that the truck driver was drunkard and was driving recklessly and at last, lost control. The police arrested the bus driver but the truck driver fled from the spot. At last, a case was filed against the owners of the vehicles and the dead bodies were sent for autopsy.

2. A report on award giving ceremony.

The prize giving ceremony of X college was held in the college auditorium on the 24th October. The Director General, Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, was the chief guest at the function. The college campus was nicely decorated with flags and festoons. The elite of the city attended the function. The Principal read out the annual report of the college at the function. Then, the programmes of recitation, singing songs and physical feats of the students took place. The audiences were satisfied with the performances of the students. Then, the chief guest gave away the prizes among the students and advised the students to brighten their future by discipline and hard-work. He advised more to retain the fame of the college and to fulfill the expectation of their parents and country. The Principal presided over the function and at last, the function came to a close with the good wishes of everybody.

The prices of daily commodities are very high. The prices are increasing by leaps and bounds. Now, it has become a common problem. The prices are sky-high for the common and poor people because they have only fixed income. The price of rice, oil, vegetables, meat and fish, medicine, cloth etc has already gone up and it is going up more. All classes of people are suffering from this problem more or less. Specially, the poor people are the worst sufferers and are compelled to starve. Some employees and workers said that they are eating just one time in a day in stead of three times. There are some factors behind it. Low productivity, population explosion, bad transportation, natural calamities and corruption are mainly responsible for it. Besides, the dishonest businessmen are creating this problem for their own interest. People are being restless and are being involved in various crimes. So, the people demand that the government should monitor the market and punish the dishonest businessmen who are intentionally doing this.

Suppose, you are a reporter of a reputed daily. You have interviewed many slum dwellers about their ways of life.

They are compelled to live here because they live below the poverty line and most of them are illiterate. Moreover, the life of Dhaka is very expensive. So, the people who are poor, are unable to live in the better places of Dhaka. Generally, slum-dwellers are day labourers, garment workers, rickshaw pullers, domestic workers, helpers of vehicles, pick-pockets, thieves, hijackers and kidnappers etc. In fact, they are the lower class of people of the city. Poverty is their daily companion and so, they become deprived of their basic needs. It is known from many slum-dwellers that diseases are their permanent companions because their dwelling places are very dirty and polluted. They are compelled to take unhygienic food and drink polluted water. Even, they do not get any proper treatment. Most of them lead sub-human life and so, they failed to manage square meals. Sometimes, they are to take rejected food. Because of illiteracy and unconsciousness, they are becoming terrorists and addicted to drug. The slum dwellers demand that the government should take proper steps to develop their condition.

It is harmful enough to destroy the future of a country. There are some reasons behind drug addiction. Unemployment, frustration and availability of it are the main causes of drug addiction. It is reported that phensydyl, heroine, cocaine and yaba are easily available  in our country and that is why, many people are being addicted. Unemployed people, frustrated young boys and girls are being addicted to drugs. Dishonest businessmen and greedy politicians are getting benefits of this profitable business. By taking bribe, the police remain silent. Undoubtedly, it is a very dangerous problem because it is causing some serious problems in our country, such as hijacking, robbery, stealing, killing etc. It is a great threat to a country like Bangladesh. So, the government and the conscious people should come forward to solve this problem without any more delay.

This time also, thousands of people attended this age-old fair. This fair continued for at least ten days. The stalls of the fair were decorated beautifully. Circus was the main attraction of this fair because there were tigers, lions, deer, elephants, bears, horses and monkeys in the circus. These animals entertained people of all ages particularly the children. The other attractions of the fair were puppet show, jatra pala, merry-go-round and magic show. Various kinds of toys, handicrafts, tapestries, bamboo made goods, balloons, earthly pots etc attracted all classes of people. In a word, the fair was like a big market of buying and selling. Gambling was the mid-night entertainment for the gamblers. This fair was a real source of entertainment for the visitors of this fair. People from different parts of the country visited this fair as before. So, the gathering of the people of all classes made this fair successful.

Trees are our best friends and help us in various ways but it is a matter of great concern that many people are cutting down trees indiscriminately. According to the climatologists, there should be 25 percent forests of the total land but there are only 16 percent forests in Bangladesh. So, Bangladesh is already at environmental risk. Trees maintain our ecological balance. They take away harmful carbon dioxide and produce oxygen for us. They save us from various kinds of natural disasters. It can be said ironically that trees are our friends but we are their enemies. Moreover, we are cutting our own nose and so, infection is a must. By cutting trees indiscriminately, the people of this country are inviting danger. We will lose our green Bangladesh and the lower parts of this country will go under water. Disasters like Tsunami ,sidr, Narges, cyclones and such like must hit our country again and again. We should ensure a better future for the future generation. So we should plant two trees if we require to  cut one tree

Atikur Rahman,Dhaka,26 October 2013:Ekushe Book Fair is the biggest book fair in our country. Every year this fair is organized in commemoration of the language movement. This is organized in the Bangla Academy premises This is a month long book fair and it attracts thousands of book lovers from all the parts of the country. This year the fair was inaugurated by the education minister. I visited this fair this year and I was astonished to see a huge collection of books. There were a lot of well-decorated book stalls and there were almost all kinds of books such as story books, adventure books, novels, poetry, comics, computer books and so on. People of all classes and ages visited the fair. Many famous and new authors gathered in the fair and a lot of readers surrounded them for autographs. Many university students were in a festive mood. Children were enjoying like Eid. It was also a meeting place of old friends. Many boys and girls went to the fair only for visiting .Some stalls sold snacks and cigarettes and some immoral boys teased girls among the crowd. However, my visit to the fair was one of the days which I remember as yet.

People are restless and are breaking down the offices of electricity all over the country. Digital Bangladesh is an utopian scheme without electricity. . Electricity is the driving force of a country and the pre-condition of any kind of development but it has become a regular incident in our country. The demand of electricity is increasing rapidly but the production of electricity is not increasing. Because of less production of electricity, the authorities become helpless and are feeling the pressure of the public. Mills and factories come to a stand-still, students are compelled to study on candle light, businessmen are suffering a great loss, farmers cannot irrigate their fields, fresh food and vegetables kept in the refrigerators get rotten and many patients are dying unexpectedly and so on. So, not only the government but also the general people should come forward to solve this problem. The general people should not misuse electricity and the government should take proper steps to produce electricity.

Shohag Ahmed,Dhaka,30 October 2013:The first day of 3 day-long hartal was observed throughout the country yesterday. It was called by the 18 party alliance  and the demand was  care-taker government or non-party government for the coming election. The supporters of hartal brought out processions across the country. The police stopped their processions and then, severe clashes took place between the picketers and the police.5 people died by the clashes,150 people were injured and 200 picketers were arrested across the country. Moreover,15 buses were set on fire and a truck driver was critically injured. All kinds of vehicles were stopped and shops, offices, banks, garments, schools, colleges were closed down across the country. All kinds of exams have been postponed because of this hartal.The general people suffered a lot and were compelled to stay at home. The day labourers had to starve for want of any work. The general people said “We never want hartal and it is a curse of dirty politics”

The Daily Star, Monir Ahmed, 25 April 2013: Rana Plaza, an eight-story commercial building collapsed in Savar yesterday at 8:45.It is reported that 3,122 workers were in the building at the time of collapse. The building contained clothing factories, a bank, apartments and several other shops. When the cracks were discovered, the bank and many shops were closed. But, the garment workers were ordered and forced to come because 24 October was a hartal day and the owner was supposed to bring out a procession against the hartal. That was really an invitation of killing.  Thousands of people were gathering around the building, some were rushing here and there, some were crying out and the rescue team along with the general people were rescuing a lot of people dead or alive. One local resident described the scene as if “an earthquake had struck”. Hartal was also withdrawn after the collapse of the building. The rescue was going on. Thousands of people were crying out to live in the building and thousands of relatives and general people were trying to save them.

A glorious victory of Bangladesh over New Zealand

Krishan Ahmed,Dhaka 31 October2013 : Yesterday a very exiting cricket match between Bangladesh and New Zealand was held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. This was a day-night and the series winning match for Bangladesh. There was a lot of excitement at the stadium because thousands of supporters inspired the players of Bangladesh. Winning the toss, Bangladesh decided to bat first and collected 247 runs for all wickets. Tamim Iqbal made the highest score of 58 runs. Mominul Islam, Naeem Islam, Mahmullah and Shohag Gazi contributed to the total score. In reply, New Zealand became all out for 207 runs. Tailor made the highest score of 45 runs and Anderson made 37 runs. The other batsmen failed to make runs. Mashrafe and Shohag Gazi took 3 wickets each. In fact, Bangladesh bowled very well and so, no batsman of New Zealand could play well and became out one after another.And finally, Bangladesh won by 40 runs. The spectators enjoyed the match to their heart’s content. This victory was immediately welcomed by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the opposition party.

Cheating the eyes of the mobile courts, many dishonest businessmen and hotel owners are mixing poisonous chemicals and colour with various kinds of foods. Food experts said that these adulterated foods are seriously harmful for human beings. Raw vegetables, milk products, fish, meat and almost all kinds of processed foods are being adulterated. The harmful chemicals are formalin, textile colours, sweeteners etc. These poisonous foods are causing diarrhoea, dysentery, kidney failure and even it can cause death. Experts said that some adulterated foods are silent killers. The general people said that these businessmen are the killers and so, the government should be more active to give them exemplary punishment.
